Plan Commission to Review Walmart Conceptual Expansion Plans Next Monday
The Plan and Architectural Review Commission is set to review conceptual plans for the approximate 29,500 square foot addition to the Whitewater Walmart store at its meeting next Monday evening. Plans for this expansion to create a Walmart Supercenter with grocery and enlarged department store areas were introduced to the community at an April 21st information meeting held at the Municipal Building.
Copies of the city planning consultant’s report (Vandewalle and Associates) on the Walmart conceptual plans have been posted on the city website under Neighborhood Services.
In addition to its initial review of the Walmart plans, the Commission will be considering site plan approval for a two phase expansion of Whitewater Greenhouses LLC at 301 County Highway U (this addition would cover almost nine acres of land over its two phases) as well as proposed amendments to the City Zoning Ordinance that would create a new R-O Non-Family Residential Overlay District (limiting non-family households to 2 or less unrelated individuals ) and concerning how conditional use permits for serving of alcohol would affect Common Council approval of sidewalk cafes.
Annual Police Day Ceremony to be Held Friday, May 21st
The annual Police Day ceremony will be held on Friday, May 21st beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the Municipal Building Community Room. Award presentations will be made to police department employees at this ceremony.

Public Information Meeting Scheduled on State Highway 59/89 Intersection Improvement Project
The public is invited to a public information meeting to discuss the upcoming Janesville Road (Wisconsin State Highway 59) and STH 89 Intersection Improvement Project. The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 20th in the Municipal Building Community Room.
The purpose of this meeting is to receive citizen input on the design of planned intersection improvements as well as to provide updated information on the project. This will include general information on project schedules, preliminary engineering design and the real estate acquisition process. Construction is scheduled for 2011.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) officials will be in attendance to answer specific questions about this project. If citizens cannot attend this meeting and would like additional information about the project, they can contact Emmanuel Yartey, project manager, at 262-548-6429 (office) or 414-750-0580 (cell).
Stephen Ambrose Memorial Highway (Whitewater STH 12 Bypass) to be Dedicated on Friday, June 25th
In early April the Wisconsin State Legislature approved the renaming of the STH 12 Whitewater Bypass to the “Stephen Ambrose Memorial Highway” in honor of Whitewater native and famous U.S. historian Stephen Ambrose. Thanks to our local representatives in the Wisconsin Assembly Kim Hixson and Stephen Nass (who incidentally was named after Ambrose) for sponsoring this legislation.
A formal dedication of the new highway designation will be held on Friday, June 25th at 11 a.m. Members of the Ambrose family will be coming from across the country to attend this ceremony as well as a family reunion that is being planned for that weekend.
The stretch of STH 12 from its intersection with CTH “P” to County Line Road will be officially signed the Stephen Ambrose Memorial Highway. The dedication will be held at the STH 12 and STH 89 intersection here in Whitewater.
Water Utility Gets High Marks from Regulators at Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
The Whitewater Water Utility got an excellent report card from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) in the department’s annual Sanitary Survey Inspection Report. The purpose of the sanitary survey is to evaluate the local water system’s source, facilities, equipment, operation, maintenance, and management as they relate to safe drinking water.
WDNR Drinking Water Engineer Thanintr Ratarsarn stated in his report that “during the course of the sanitary survey, no significant deficiencies were identifies. Significant deficiencies indicate noncompliance with one or more Wisconsin Administrative Codes and/or represent an immediate health risk to consumers. “
Only one item was even noted in the report that needed addressing and that was some pump discharge piping was starting to show sign of rust and it must be painted to protect from exterior corrosion.
Our water utility goes through this survey review by the WDNR every four years. A copy of the full WDNR survey report is posted on the city website under Public Works.
Thanks to Superintendent Rick Lien and water operators Bob Bonk, Ted Kraus and Lauren Miller for their conscientious work and dedication towards maintaining our high drinking water quality standards here in Whitewater!
